Project Description

XERODERMA PIGMENTOSUM

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare condition that is passed from parents to children.

It causes the skin and the tissue that covers the eye to be extremely sensitive to UV light.

UV light, like that found in sunlight, damages the skin’s genetic material. Normally, the body repairs this damage. However, in people suffering from XP, the body is not ABLE to repair it. As a result, the skin becomes very thin and patches of various colors. Also, blindness and skin cancer will appear.

Kalkidan was born with XP. She has lived without being able to go out to the street or to go to school in order to avoid the sunlight. Thanks to the purchase of a special mask and some gloves she has been able to return to school.
